The start of this year has made it hard for me to focus on reading. Rather, the state of the world on a daily basis has made it difficult for me to focus on anything other than prepping for worst case scenarios in a number of situations (fiscal, physical, occupational, etc). But getting to finally finish Zafon's first entry in the Cemtery of Forgotten Books series was really nice as I truly love his prose. 

March is a wide open month with not a lot happening across its weeks, so hopefully I'll find more time to read through the new books I bought while in Portland, along with several others that have been at the top of my ever-growing "to read" piles in my office.

I got to participate in my first Boozy Book Fair here in KC last weekend. Held in a downtown hotel exhibition hall, there were some 3,000+ attendees who got to meet tons of local authors and literary-minded vendors. I had a ton of great conversations with people and ended up nearly selling out of all three of my short story collections; grand total = 42 books sold. 

So, hopefully people will find my books worth their admission price and I'll get to hear about it at the next Boozy Book Fair this summer (July 26th) or somewhere online in a review. 

The snow and cold are finally mostly gone, so the weekend has been busy with meetups and patio drinks and shows at local distillieries. 

Not much else to rap about at the moment. Hope you're all staying as sane as you possibly can.

Chaosium Con Three: Footloose & Sanity Free

There is something to horror gaming that, to me, is more than simple escapism or fun, each for their own (totally valid) sake. As a writer, I find that I really enjoy the collaborative nature of the storytelling done by everyone at the table. It is chaos to the nth degree, and it is often a great time because of the chaos...which can be controlled and/or managed. At some point, the terror stops and you go on with your day. The situation is finite.  But there's also something to be said for horror gaming in that, at least for me personally, it's allowed me to better adapt and solution for the real life daily horrors that perpetuate and grow and continue.  Horror gaming ends up being a nice release valve for me; so, too, are the people that I get to do so much of it with. Chaosium Con 2: The Eldritch Buchaloo

Back when I was 11 or 12, my friend group consisted of hyper nerds into video games and roleplaying games (we were good at the former and almost certainly doing the latter completely incorrectly). And I would spend the next several years playing DnD (or HeroQuest) or Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles and Other Strangeness off and on with various friend groups.  I played once or twice in college again, but left the hobby alone for the most part until 2016 or 2017 when I got back into a campaign with some old friends from my DJing days. Then mom got sick and I had to put that on the backburner again. Then the pandemic hit and I found myself gravitating toward the collective storytelling found in horror roleplaying games like Kult and Call of Cthulhu as opposed to the fantasy worlds of Dungeons and Dragons. What fantasy lacked is what horror seemed to contain completely: a sense of actual danger and, at least for me, infinitely more interesting storytelling and narrative opportunities....
