Upcoming Literary Events | Kansas City & St. Louis (August, October, November)

 


While completing work on my latest book (which you can purchase HERE), I made it a goal to have more readings and get involved with more literary events in the hopes of widening my reach and, hopefully, growing my audience outside of my normal circles. 

I was fortunate to have my first book release party at Afterword Tavern & Shelves here in KC back in April. It was a fantastic event and I've never seen so many of my people in one place to help support my literary endeavors. Even the bartenders were shocked at the turnout. 

I'm fortunate to, again, get to do a reading and signing at Subterranean Books in St. Louis this month. It's a great little store and I'm looking forward to a ton of my favorite STL people to show up (and snag dinner with afterward). 

And now I've gotten to meet some great word nerds around town who are putting on regular events to hype local authors. Through Sarah Wakeman, the Karma Community Market, and others, I'm getting the chance to meet other booklovers around the KC area.

There is something to horror gaming that, to me, is more than simple escapism or fun, each for their own (totally valid) sake. As a writer, I find that I really enjoy the collaborative nature of the storytelling done by everyone at the table. It is chaos to the nth degree, and it is often a great time because of the chaos...which can be controlled and/or managed. At some point, the terror stops and you go on with your day. The situation is finite.  But there's also something to be said for horror gaming in that, at least for me personally, it's allowed me to better adapt and solution for the real life daily horrors that perpetuate and grow and continue.  Horror gaming ends up being a nice release valve for me; so, too, are the people that I get to do so much of it with. Chaosium Con 2: The Eldritch Buchaloo

Back when I was 11 or 12, my friend group consisted of hyper nerds into video games and roleplaying games (we were good at the former and almost certainly doing the latter completely incorrectly). And I would spend the next several years playing DnD (or HeroQuest) or Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles and Other Strangeness off and on with various friend groups.  I played once or twice in college again, but left the hobby alone for the most part until 2016 or 2017 when I got back into a campaign with some old friends from my DJing days. Then mom got sick and I had to put that on the backburner again. Then the pandemic hit and I found myself gravitating toward the collective storytelling found in horror roleplaying games like Kult and Call of Cthulhu as opposed to the fantasy worlds of Dungeons and Dragons. What fantasy lacked is what horror seemed to contain completely: a sense of actual danger and, at least for me, infinitely more interesting storytelling and narrative opportunities.  So I b
